This time of year is so terribly busy for everyone, but I wanted type out a short message of cheer to all and to remind you that schools across the country are STILL looking for help for their second semester. So many changes happen at the end of the year that our list of openings is as hefty now as it was at the front of the school year. Below I've listed just a few of the positions that we have open. There are 5 pages of openings on my board as most schools leave for their winter break. They'll start back up on January 6, but some are interviewing over the holidays. If you're interested, let me know and I'll do my best to connect with the Special Ed directors to "get the ball rolling". HAPPY HOLIDAYS, EVERYONE!!!
If you know anyone who might be looking for work or looking to make a change, please pass along my information. Or if you have any interest, please give me a call or drop me a note! (866-874-7390) email address: millie.simpson@soliant.com

Overcoming family challenges for therapy services
Below is an email sent out by the Teletherapy Division (VocoVision) of our company. If anyone can help them in their research to improve their services to families of special needs children, please contact me at 866-874-7390 or email me at millie.simpson@soliant.com.
Request for information:
As you gather with friends and family to celebrate this great American holiday, the VocoVision team would like to ask for your help.
We are in the early stages of developing a new VocoVision telespeech service that can be used directly in the home. An important part of our process is understanding the challenges families currently have when seeking professional therapy services. Beginning the week after Thanksgiving, VocoVision will be interviewing families with children who are receiving speech therapy to find out more about how they juggle the demands of family life along with the need for speech services.
Thank you so much for any help in referring family members who would be willing to give us their input!
Millie

New Mexico school looking for new grad SLP
This will be short and sweet, as I just found out that our new grad applicant for a school in Albuquerque, NM has decided to take a position in a clinic rather than our school. We have a CF supervisor lined up and the school is very open to new grads. If you are graduating in December and would be interested in this position, please contact me ASAP. Or, if you know a fellow graduate looking for a "done deal" spot, please pass me along. A bilingual candidate is preferred (Spanish), but not necessary.
We will assist you with NM licensure, housing and travel if you are not in New Mexico and considering working a travel contract.
Send me a resume at millie.simpson@soliant.com or feel free to call me during the week at 866-874-7390.

Long list of Special Ed jobs outside of therapists
In our office/call center here, there are "captains" to each of our divided territories who check with their team to update our list of open jobs each week. I was surprised to see how many positions were open in what we call our Pupil Services Group (PSG) this week. These are positions outside the typical Occupational, Physical and Speech therapy realm. I won't list all of them here, but below is a sampling of the states who need help this week:
Teacher for the Visually Impaired (TVI) CA, CO, MD, NC, NV and VA
School Psychologist CO, IL, NM, OH, OR, SD, VA, WA, WI
Teacher of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (TDHH) CA, CO
Sign Language Interpreter (SLI) CA, CO
Braillest near Sacramento, CA
Special Ed Teachers (often require specific AZ, CA, MN, NM, WA
certifications)
If you are qualified and are interested in working as a contract Special Ed professional, give me a call or drop me an email if you see anything here that might be a good fit for you. I'll give you as many details as possible! Thanks, all! millie.simpson@soliant.com/866-874-7390 (In my scripting of this, everything was in a nice column format; I'm sorry it doesn't appear that way for your viewing. I'm still learning.) ;-{

Three new therapy jobs this week from my desk!
This was a great week for me, as I received requests from three different Special Ed Departments for assistance to fill some upcoming gaps in staffing this week!
Just to explain a little about how my office operates (and why I'm excited about this past week): There are about 50 recruiters/marketers in my office who make calls to schools trying to uncover open jobs. Most of the time, we are taking a particular professional (OT, PT or SLP) who has indicated that they are looking for a contract or permanent position in a certain area and calling schools around that locale to "sell" that person. We hear a lot of "no thank you's", "we don't use contract services" and "all our positions are filled". And, so often we are merely leaving voice mails in the Special Ed Department; either for the director or the director's assistant. It was so very nice this week to be on the other end of the phone/email to have some of the folks return my calls with a need for my help! ;-}
I received a call from the locations listed below with requests for professional contractors:
1. Tucson, AZ (see my October 6, 2013 post) needs a Speech Language Pathologist to fill in for a maternity leave anticipated to begin in January and go through at least the end of February (could extend, as many maternity leaves do).
2. Grand Prairie, TX, which is situated between Dallas and Fort Worth has an Occupational Therapy need to start ASAP and run through December 20, 2013
3. Reading, PA has two back-to-back maternity leaves starting ASAP to run through mid June, 2014. This is an Early Intervention position for a Speech Language Pathologist requiring some background working with the wee ones and current credentials to work in the state of Pennsylvania.
Call me at 866-874-7390 or send over your resume to me at millie.simpson@soliant.com and I'll catch up with you!

Upcoming SLP need near Minneapolis, MN
We get lots of folks calling us to work in the Minneapolis area, and this opening came in last week. This position is to cover a maternity leave, anticipated to begin the first of January and run through at least the end of March. The caseload is all elementary ages and situated at only one campus.
Anyone considering a move to the area or someone who might have let their MN license lapse would have plenty of time to apply and be granted the SLP MN license. Must be a master's level Speech Pathologist and have a current ASHA certification.
If you (as crazy as it sounds to me) love the cold and snow, this is a really good school district who is looking to begin interviews for this position ASAP!
Send me your resume at millie.simpson@soliant.com, drop me a note with questions or ring me up at 866-874-7390!

Arizona schools' game of chess
First and foremost, does anyone know a Speech Pathologist looking for a school position in the Phoenix area?
In order to work in a school system in Arizona as a Speech Language Pathologist, one must obtain a professional SLP license through the AZ Board of Health, a fingerprint clearance from the AZ Department of Public Safety (separate from the one required by the Board of Health; as if one's fingerprint might change when you walk from one building to another) AND a teaching certificate from the AZ Department of Education. The timeline to obtain all of these expensive requirements can be up to 6-8 weeks.
Now, when a school district calls me and asks me to send them an SLP ASAP, about the only thing I can do is steal a Speech Pathologist from another school district! I envision Arizona schools like a huge chess board where I move one SLP chess piece from one district to another!
There is always a chance that someone on maternity leave might be ready to return to work or someone who has retired might want to return for a temporary assignment....or someone may be planning to move to Arizona and have already put the trifecta of monster-approval-machines to work. However, the odds are low on any of those sweet scenarios.
I'm not just picking on Arizona; I can name several other states who make working in their locale difficult because of requirements (IL, PA, GA, FL, AK...I'm sure there are others). I'm always taken aback that someone doesn't petition ASHA to make things more uniform. Surely the children and their disabilities that one treats in TX or NM (simpler states to obtain credentialing) are no different from the children in AZ or IL! Who makes these decisions-bureaucrats with no concept of what's going on in their state??
OK, enough of my rant. Anyone working in an Arizona school want to make a move across the chessboard??? ;-}

Physical Therapist need for a DFW school district!!
Hi all!
I am working with a school district in the Dallas-Ft. Worth area who has an upcoming maternity leave looming over them! They expect their PT to go out on leave mid-late October and to be out at least through the end of January, 2014. The caseload of 40-50 students includes all ages and multiple disabilities. It is a full time position (37.5 hours per week)and may extend longer than the anticipated January end date.
This is a very organized, supportive and accomodating staff, and they would love to talk with you! They may be able to wait on licensure if you are interested and can apply with the TX board within the next two weeks.
Let me know if you've any interest, and I will arrange a phone interview for you! Give me a call at 866-874-7390 or email your resume to millie.simpson@soliant.com.

Occupational Therapists needed in NC!!
Now the spotlight is on North Carolina!!
I'm working with a school district just outside of Charlotte who has 2-3 contract positions open for Occupational Therapy candidates. This is one of my favorite districts, as the administrative staff is so very organized, supportive and accomodating. They do prefer that applicants are already NC licensed, but will consider candidates who have applied and are in process.
One spot is a speciality school with students ages 3-21. The facility has a gymnasium-feel to it and has a brand new swimming pool.
The other position is itinerate working mainly with elementary ages, but may include some pre-school students and/or middle school ages.
Give me a call at 866-874-7390 or send a resume to me at millie.simpson@soliant.com.

Alaska is calling you!!!
First of all, I want to thank my co-worker, Kirk, for finding an awesome Physical Therapist for my NC school district! She's a great fit for their team, and they are looking forward to her appearance in a couple of weeks!
For some reason this week, Alaska school districts have called us with several job openings. If you are the adventuresome sort and think you might like a school assignment for the remainder of the 2013-2014 school year, we might have a job for you.
Some of our latest openings are for:
Sign Language Interpreters
School Psychologists
Speech Language Pathologists
Physical Therapists
3 Special Education Teachers - 1) emphasis on math
2) preschool expertise
3) autism specialist
We'll help you with the licensure process and reimburse you for your travel. We, of course, assist you with housing with tax-free stipends as a part of your compensation package or we can actually find a rental and set it up for you. My Occupational Therapist who worked there all last year and returned this year found a cozy cabin for an exceptionally reasonable price.
Give me a call if you'd like more information about any of the positions listed, and we'll start the process of starting you on a great adventure!!! 866-874-7390

Are you a Physical Therapist that would like a school setting?
I took a job order this afternoon from a school near Charlotte, NC. They are looking for a full time Physical Therapist to join their team by mid September. There should be enough time to obtain NC licensure, and my company would reimburse you for the cost of that license.
This is a 37.5 hour work week, and is a district-wide position with a caseload of 40-50 children, ages preK-12. They prefer someone with a schools experience, but will consider others, especially those with some pediatric experience.
Call me at 866-874-7390 if you have any interest or pass me along if you know someone who might have an interest.

Pupil Services, not therapists...
How about a listing for those of you who are outside my normal pleas for Occupational, Physical and Speech Therapists? There's a definite need for you who work exclusively with the visually impaired, deaf and hard of hearing, and other special needs children. If you'd like information about working as a "traveler" as many of our healthcare professionals do, please read through my January, 2011 post. These are all full time school schedules starting as soon as you can show up! Here you go!

It's getting down to the wire for most school systems, which (for anyone still looking for a placement) is good news! This time of the school year is much busier than it was just a month ago. Unfortunately for the schools, caseloads increase and people drop off at the last minute. The special ed directors are frantically calling all their contract services to see who is still left. For those of you who are patient (or maybe just more of a last minute-type person) this puts you in center stage!! We recruiters know that some of you are aware of this waltz that we dance with schools every year and have waited for this "sweet spot" to nab that perfect position in the area that just wasn't available even 2 weeks ago. Below are a few of the requests we've had recently and some that have been around awhile. Call me, and I'll do my best to get you an interview and a locked-in contract for the 2013-2014 school year! 866-874-7390.

Happy Independence Day!
Since I am out of the office the rest of this week to visit with my family in Cincinnati, I won't be there for the weekly update on new school jobs. However, I do remember a few of the ones that came across my desk yesterday and today (although they may be re-runs). So here's a few to consider when you're browsing for a change in employment or just starting your career! I'll be back in the office on Monday afternoon. Call me if anything "strikes your fancy"! 866-874-7390

Some new jobs; some still open
This list will really heat up after the 4th of July, as most schools have their budgets set and can move forward to fill their open positions for Special Ed Professionals. Dear Oklahoma, Maybe we can help!!
There are no words to write that can ease the suffering of those caught in the horrific weather occurrences of the past two weeks in Oklahoma. All of the country is concerned and many wondering what they might do to help. As many have, I have made a donation to the Red Cross. If you haven't done so, please give whatever you are able.
Let me offer a suggestion that might be a little outside the box to assist in a temporary housing/employment solution. After Katrina hit New Orleans several years ago, many people just needed to get out of the area. My organization (and many others like ours) helped people find jobs in other states (some near enough that people could go back to New Orleans on weekends to tend to the business of reclaiming their former lives). We have a housing department that can set up an apartment for you near the contract job that we secure for you, or we can give you tax-free housing stipends for you to find a place on your own. If you decide to completely relocate, we can also assist in finding work and housing for that scenario. You might check out some of my previous posts for jobs for the upcoming school year to consider a location that would interest you and your family for either a temporary solution or for a long term adjustment in your life. My department focuses on school/pediatric positions, but we have nursing, locums, government and therapy departments as well. I will be glad to direct you to the most qualified recruiter for assistance in locating work in your area of expertise.
If anyone in Oklahoma (or any other area affected by devastation) is a professional healthcare worker (nurse, doctor, therapist, special ed professional, etc.) and you need temporary work/housing while you rebuild your life, please give me a call. (866-874-7390) You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

Latest Contract Pediatric Jobs for '13-14 School Year
Once again, some of these may be repeats, which only means that they are still available for applicants. New Speech grads might need to be a bit more patient, as many schools will first attempt to find ASHA certified SLP's before they'll consider a new grad. But....have faith; there will be jobs aplenty by mid-July, if not sooner!!! There are a few who know they have supervisors & will accept applicants seeking their CFY now. Call me!!!

It think it might be a good idea to give you a weekly update of the available school jobs that are coming in to our office. ARKANSAS ROCKS!!!!
As you all probably know, a recruiter's day is spent making phone calls attempting to find someone who may be looking for work, looking to make a change in employment or for someone who may want to try a "travel" job. I have spent the last five weeks calling through the licensure list for Occupational Therapists in Arkansas to help an early intervention clinic find some help.
I just had to write a note to thank the entire state for their great attitude and welcoming demeanors over the phone. I have decided to hang on to my list of numbers to keep for one of those days when people hang up on me, or pick up to grumpily tell me they can't talk (so why did they answer the phone?) or yell at me for calling. I can just take a break and call someone in AR to lift my spirits a little!
I am on the "S's" on the licensure list and have not talked to even ONE person in Arkansas who wasn't totally helpful, pleasant and warm. Now, I can't say that about some states (whose names I won't mention), but on behalf of every recruiter out there, I want to say THANK YOU, ARKANSAS!!!!

TeleSpeech vs TelePortation
I have once again found a great guest writer to take care of my February post for me. Please meet our guru of TeleTherapy, Ruben Lopez:
TeleSpeech
versus TelePortation
By
Ruben Lopez
Education
Solutions Manager in TeleSpeech
January
25, 2013
We’ve
all heard of the cool, “Star Trek-ie” concepts like:
Teleportation, or getting beamed up, or traveling through time, etc.
But the reality is, this concept is not too far away. As a matter of
fact, it may already being happening now, just in a different format:
it’s called TeleMedicine (or TeleHealth or TeleTherapy or
TeleSpeech). Telemedicine generally refers to the use of
communications and information technologies for the delivery of
clinical care. This is quickly becoming an effective, empowering and
streamlined way of making un-accessible medical or therapeutic care,
a reality, regardless of location, or geographical challenge!
I
consider myself fortunate in that I am able to offer these types of
services today in my line of work. We deliver TeleSpeech services to
schools nationwide. Schools get to tap into their statewide or even
a nationwide pool of candidates to find a Speech Therapist (Speech
Language Pathologist or S.L.P.); the SLP gets to work from home and
doesn’t have to move or quit a job or ask a spouse to give up their
job; or sit in traffic, or waste time traveling from school to
school; and the list of benefits goes on an on. Best of all, the
kids get their speech needs met almost immediately; they get to
“play” with cool and fun touchscreen technology; they get to be
the “cool” kids in the school that meet with their Speech
Therapist virtually. We’ve even piloted, at the request of one of
our school clients, Occupational Therapy across our TeleTherapy
platform since Sept 2012, and it has met their needs perfectly and
without a glitch! Our school client is happy, our OT is happy, and
best of all, the students are getting the OT services they had been
needing for so long, without having to wait anymore! (To learn more
details, feel free to contact me at 888-820-9302.)
For
most of us that live in large cities and even small cities, this is
not a big deal. But when you think of the remotest of cities in the
US, this is a luxury. Take for example the Aleutian Islands of
Alaska. Some of the schools there only get an SLP a few times a year
for a few weeks, and that’s it, because they are 800 miles away
from the nearest city of Anchorage. TeleSpeech completely eliminates
that challenge. Kids can go to school, “meet” with their Speech
Therapist virtually, do speech exercises on-line, get immediate
feedback, and do so a few times a week versus once every few months.
All from the comfort of their school and with the Therapist not
having to hop on an aqua-plane, a ferry ride and a dog sled
Another
great example is Verizon’s Vgo robot (pronounced “Vee-go”) that
is up and running today.
The Vgo robot is about the height of 10 year old kid and has a small
monitor and pivoting camera where the head of the child would be.
The child controls where it goes from home from his PC. The child,
who for a myriad of reasons can not physically be in school (because
he’s contagious, or too weak, or lives too far, etc), can attend
school virtually. He speaks to the teachers and his classmates,
roams the hallways, goes to his next class, parks himself at his
desk, and yet he never has to leave his home. And this is also
being done with the Vgo robot in the corporate world, so remote
employees can “be” in their office without having to move across
the world or across the country, and still be in their office, see
their fellow employees, and attend meetings, virtually.
So,
sure, I know, it’s not ideal. And I know it’s not teleportation.
But maybe it’s the next best thing. Or maybe it IS the modern
version of teleportation!...
Call
it what you will, but it the point is, it IS happening now!
So
beam me up Scottie!!
