Paperwork for parent conference circa 1960

My mom gave me a box of things she had saved throughout the years from my childhood. There were report cards from the time I was in kindergarten through high school (Lord knows I'd never want MY children to see those!) There was also a report from my Speech Therapist about my progress. Ahhh, for the simplicity of the 60's, eh, folks??? I know it may be a bit hard to read, but it basically tells how many sessions I had & my mom had to sign it...that's it!!!

End of year shifts

If anyone is looking to make a change in employment at the end of the year, now is the time to contact your/a recruiter (or just me..;-}...). So many shifts happen in school systems this time of year-those expecting a child don't return for the second semester, a spouse may be accepting a transfer to a different location, caseloads increase as children enroll for the second semester, and sometimes folks are just ready for a change. Below are a few of the locations where we are still receiving requests for Special Ed professionals:

S. of Baltimore MD - SLP/ccc
Winchester CT - School Psychologist
Jonesboro GA - Physical Therapist
Stockton IL - Teacher for Deaf & Hard of Hearing
Several locales NM - Physical Therapist

"T" is for Texas, Therapists, Terrific Special Ed Professionals, Too few of you!!!!

It seems that Texas is sorely lacking (although there are numerous universities and colleges in the state with SLP and OT programs) in therapists to handle the ever-increasing caseloads in their schools and medical facilities. We spend our weeks making hundreds of phone calls trying to uncover just ONE Special Ed professional, SLP or OT who might be available to give some of their time (though most of you are working multiple jobs)! The majority of positions that come across my desk are school districts, but we also have pediatric clinics and sometimes hospitals seeking help in their recruiting efforts. Below is a list of jobs in Texas that we have available this week:

Discipline Location Details

OMS -school- El Paso- full time, start date Nov. 1

OT - school- Lake Jackson- 1 day/wk

OT - school- Houston- 40 hrs/wk

OT - hospital- San Antonio- inpatient, 13 wk travel job

OT - school- E. of Dallas- full or part time

OT - peds clinic- San Antonio- 30-35 hrs/wk. outpat, autism

SLP- school- Austin- 15 hrs/wk, preK-5th grade

SLP- peds clinic- Ft. Worth- afternoon hours/2-3 days per week

SLP- school- Irving- full or part time hours

SLP- school- btwn Austin-Houston- low caseload, full time

Call me at 770-325-0234 (local) or 866-874-7390 (toll-free) or email your resume to millie.simpson@soliant.com. If you are outside of Texas, we will help you with the licensure process, (TX is one of the few states that is fairly simple) travel, housing and just generally be there for you. I always answer my desk phone or return calls as soon as I get back to my desk!!!

Thank you for your labors!!!

Just a note to thank all of you wonderful professionals who have dedicated your lives and your time to improving the lives of our nation's children. Every hour you spend practicing your chosen area of expertise is an hour added to the overall betterment and quality of our citizenry.

Although we are not personally witnessing your efforts and progress (since we are behind the scenes here-you only know us as a voice), we do hear from the Directors of Special Ed Departments, parents, teachers and administrative staff who let us know that you are working towards the goals, filling in staffing gaps and making progress to enhance their particular school district and to make their lives easier.

Thank you, thank you, thank you; and have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend spent with loved ones and lots of good eats!!!

Approximate timelines for SLP licenses by state

Whether you're a seasoned "traveler" or just beginning to consider jumping into that nomadic life-style, licensure is always an issue and has to be dealt with ASAP in order to work in a different state. Each state has different requirements and processes that can prevent you from starting a travel assignment on time; some with requirements for certification through the Board of Education or a fingerprint clearance that takes months to be cleared. When considering taking an assignment outside your state, you should take into consideration the onus/time it will take to obtain a license/certification. You might just decide that waiting 60 days for AZ to process your paperwork is just too long and that NM might be just as nice for a western adventure Below is a listing of approximate time lines for states across the US:

Bilingual SLP with ASHA certification + CA, GA, IL, WI and AK jobs!!!

My client in the Charlotte, NC area is seeking a bilingual (Spanish) SLP to contract for the full 2014-2015 school year. Their district hire is taking the year off to stay home with her young children. Her caseload consists of direct services at one or two campuses, but the bulk of the position is to assist with bilingual evals district-wide. The Special Ed Department is one of the most supportive, accomodating teams I've ever worked with, and I highly recommend this school district!

Contact me if you are bilingual and have your ASHA certification and would like to be in the Charlotte area!

In other news, here's a few other new positions that came in this week, all for the full 2014-2015 school year:

This is the time of year!!!

The flood gates are about to open and we here in the schools division of my company will be inundated with requests from Special Ed Departments to help them find professionals to contract for the 2014-2015 school year. They have been "putting us on hold" for the last couple of months as they finish out the 2013-2014 year, figure out who is and isn't coming back next year, nailing down budgets and configuring their caseloads for the upcoming year.

If you've been calling recruiters to find work, you know that there are positions out there; just maybe not in the location of your choice. Well....good news, call us again! The schools that have been pushing us back are about to decide that they truly do need us to help them. No promises here that I'll be able to get you into Nashville, NYC, New Orleans, Boston, San Francisco or Austin as those popular cities have an over-abundance of people knocking on their front doors (supply & demand comes into play). However, I may be able to get you near enough that a short drive will take you there for the weekends!

The next few posts I put on here will probably consist of new positions that I'm seeing come in on our weekly list of current available jobs. Let me know if one (or more) catches your eye, and I'll do my best to get you an interview. Below are just a few locations that I picked off our 8 pages of jobs this week:

Fairbanks, AK OT/PT/Sign Language/SLP

Western LA 3 SLP openings -may consider new grads

Several locations in AR SLP or CFY/Spec. Ed. Teacher

Phoenix and Tucson, AZ OT/PT/SLP-ccc/Spec. Ed Teachers

Too many to mention locations in CA SLP-ccc/TVI/Sign Language/OT/Psychologist

Southern FL on both coasts SLP or CFY

So many locations around IL SLP or CFY/OT/PT

NW NM (easy licensure process) SLP/audiologist/ed. diag/RN/Sign Language

You can call me at 866-874-7390 or drop me an email, millie.simpson@soliant.com if you'd like more information. Happy hunting!

YIKES!! I have an interview!!!!

First of all, congratulations to all you new grads! You've worked so very hard, and now it's off to the races for a job search! We here at the office occasionally listen in on phone interviews that we've arranged (not emulating the NSA or anything). We like to be available for both our clients and the interviewee to answer questions or to clarify anything that might not have been covered in our interview prep. We also learn a lot more about the job being offered, details about the school district and common questions that special ed directors/lead therapists/superintendents ask in interviews. Below is a compilation of some of these queries to help you prepare for an interview:

Dealing with:

Education and Training

1. What prompted you to choose Speech Pathology/Occupational Therapy/Physical Therapy as your major?

2. Walk me through your academic background.

3. Have you taken PRAXIS?

4. Do you have your credentials or are you eligible to obtain licensing?

Work Experience

1. Tell me about your current position/practicum.

2. Tell me about your previous position/practicum.

3. Why did you leave your last position?

4. Tell me about a time when you went above and beyond the call of duty for a patient.

5. What was the most interesting job or project so far in your career/studies?

Questions specific to the field

1. What are some of the challenges you think you might meet as a Speech Language Pathologist/Occuational Therapist/Physical Therapist?

2. What do you deem as the best aspects of your chosen profession?

3. What ages do you prefer to work with and why?

4. Have you had parents observe you? How did that go?

Personal

1. Tell me about 3 qualities that co-workers would describe as your work/therapy style.

Hopefully, this will give you a "leg up" as you compete with your fellow therapists for the same position!!!!

The onus of a relocation...

For the last several weeks, I've used this blog mostly to advertise and tout jobs that we have open. And I've mentally beat myself up for being lazy and not actually scripting a useful post (not that seeing our true openings isn't useful).

So, in that determined spirit, I will attempt to write something addressing those of you who may be thinking of relocating and the benefits of using a recruiter to assist in your job search, your move and your getting settled into a new locale. Here are a few of the ways a recruiter might be very helpful.

*We recruiters are at our desks on the phones all day long; we can call schools, clinics and hospitals to ferret out open jobs that may not be advertised yet and "sell" you to a client. You are probably still working, coming home in the evening to your domestic chores (be they husband, children, pets, housework, etc.) Your time to research jobs in your new location is limited to the time that you are NOT at work and NOT caught up in what is your life now. We don't really EVEN want to talk about packing and/or preparing your house to be sold or rented.

*If you fit into the IRS requirements for being a traveler (see the January, 2011 post on this blog), you may qualify for tax-free stipends for housing and incidentals and assistance with your travel expenses. That kind of pay package puts more money in your pocket, as a good bit of your paycheck is not taxed...AND puts you in a lesser tax bracket at the end of the year!

*We can put you on contract with the facility/school, and you are obligated to the position only for the length of your contract; this gives you a chance to "try before you buy". You're not walking in with an obligation to take a permanent job at the get-go. Nearly all of our clients have agreements with us to either buy out your contract if you both decide it's a good fit before the end of your commitment to us.

*We often have information about areas from talking with other people we have placed there. We chat with our employees on a regular basis and learn quite a bit about the areas where we have placed them to work. For example, I know that you do not want to live in McKinney, TX and commute to Arlington, TX, as the traffic is comparable to Atlanta traffic during a snow storm! We also have links and information about license and certification requirements for all the states, and I would be happy to share any of that information with you.

In conclusion, if you are relocating or if you know someone who might be, give me a call or pass me along. I'll be glad to share any information I might have to make one's transition run a little smoother.

The number right to my desk is 866-874-7390 or feel free to drop me an email, millie.simpson@soliant.com

Icy in Atlanta and jobs are coming in like the Polar Express!!!

In this age of connection, my office team is still working together via email from home. There are still many school jobs available all over the country! I am seeing many of my co-workers (as am I) taking this opportunity to post lots of our jobs on our company website, soliant.com. But all those listed jobs can be confusing (since all 50+ of us can script a job posting for the same opening), so I am using this venue to consolidate what I am seeing come across from my group TODAY, February 12 (President Lincoln's actual birthday, by the way). So if you call or email me, it is unlikely that I'll tell you that it has been filled (unless someone at Soliant is really good at working from home). I'll try to organize it by state, nearest city, discipline and any details I might have. Look for another update before day's end!

Leave your coat with your sister and bring your flip-flops!

It seems like very few states have escaped some winter weather this year. Here in Atlanta, the ice-snow mixture created a nightmare for far too many people last Tuesday. I, personally, brought a change of clothes and a toothbrush and spent the night at the office.....it's all about planning! ;-}

If you think you might want to try a travel job and jump into an early Spring, why not consider one of our open school jobs in Florida; coastal Georgia; San Antonio, Texas; southern California or southern New Mexico. Many schools are still looking for Special Ed professionals to help them finish out this school year. We have openings for Occupational, Speech and Physical Therapists, as well as Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVI), School Psychologists and Orientation and Mobility Specialists (OMS)- most of them school-based. There are also a few pediatric clinics (San Antonio for one) looking for OT's.

NOW.....if you love the snow & cold, we can set you up for a job in Denver, CO; Chicago, IL or Saginaw, MI. Just drop me a note at millie.simpson@soliant.com or give me a call at 866-874-7390 and I'll check to see what we might have to match your preferences.

Tired of snow??? Come south for a second semester school job!!

Having been raised in southern Ohio, I endured the snow (not nearly as much as my friends to the north in Cleveland, Toledo and even Columbus) until I was in my early 20's when I decided to move to Atlanta, GA. I set about looking for work and had a December interview set up. I found it was warm enough that I didn't even need to wear a coat! That made my decision to never move back to Ohio!

Having said all of that, if you are tired of that cold, wet, slippery stuff and would like to get out of it for a while, why not consider taking a travel job in a more climate-friendly location? Even though it has been and probably will be cold even in our more southern states, we southern folk just don't deal with snow. If we do get a bit of it, we all just stay home until it melts sometime around lunch time, and then we head into work!!! Now THAT'S the way to deal with SNOW!!!

Some of our jobs are in locations such as El Paso, TX; Charlotte, NC; Atlanta, Columbus and Macon, GA; southern NM; southern CA; San Francisco area of CA; and several areas of South Carolina.

NOW....if you just LOVE the snow.....we can send you to Alaska, Chicago, Washington state or Michigan. Those of you in the arena of Special Education Professionals have such an advantage for living a nomadic life. We, of course, help pay for your travel and are able (through IRS laws) to offer you a pay package with a good bit of tax-free monies.

We are placing Occupation, Physical and Speech Therapists as well as Deaf Ed Teachers, School Psychologists, Teachers for the Visually Impaired and Sign Language Interpreters.

Call me for more information or go to Soliant.com to view some of the locations where we have openings. Of course, you can always call me (866-874-7390) to get an up-to-date listing of what jobs are open.
