Beach on the brain?

Hello everyone! I took a weekend trip to Hilton Head, SC. This resort town is about twenty miles away from Savannah. At seven miles in width and fourteen in length, it is the second largest Atlantic coast barrier island after Long Island, NY. I thought I'd include some pictures and tell you all about the jobs we have in Hilton Head. We are currently hiring a full-time school psychologist, a special educatkon teacher, and an occupational therapist. If you have beach on the brain, with a fascination with southern charm, it may be time to start a a new contract assignment! There aren't many tourists at this time of the year, but it's warm enough to lay out on the beach.  One piece of advice I'll give is to not feed the alligators! I included a photo of the warning sign. Alligators become aggressive if you feed them and some locals will tell you that they will eat dogs in the neighborhood!

Passing the torch

It's been a wonderful, rewarding 13+ years here at Soliant, but it's time to turn in my key card and move on. I have given my notice and will be leaving this wonderful organization as of noon today. Two of my co-workers have expressed interest in taking over this blog. Preschool teacher job in PA

Usually I'm on here begging for SLP, OT or PT candidates. Well...one of my clients in the Reading, Pennsylvania area has asked me to try to find a preschool teacher for their 3-5 year old classrooms. There are under 15 students on the caseload, and it is full time hours for the remainder of this school year.

If an applicant has a certification as a Special Education Teacher, the pay package will get a boost, but that certification isn't a requirement for this position. Of course, the state of PA already has enough requirements (in order to work in a school) to keep you quite busy for several weeks...lol.

Well, we really did have a total eclipse yesterday; didn't we? Hoping that everyone obeyed the rules for "keeping your vision". I lost vision in my right eye about 5 years ago from not doing so! It's a real thing!

It's been a while since I've scripted a post (which is not so unusual for me), but I had a bit going on. My father passed away, and I spent a good bit of time with my family in Cincinnati; he was 88 and ready to go, but those of us left behind are never ready; are we?

Now it's time to buckle down and find jobs for people and people for jobs!

As promised in my last post, this one will feature positions in larger cities rather than the small town locations. Below are some of our more urgent spots. Many schools have already begun classes and the gaps in Special Ed staff are becoming more important than ever to get covered. Here ya go:

Atlanta, GA If you can name a discipline in Special Ed, we probably have an open position for such; SLP, OT, PT, TVI, DHH, SLI..and any other acronym you can think of!

Chicago, IL I must be honest and tell you that most of our openings in this area won't be right in Chicago proper, but the suburbs are rife with Special Ed needs. See acronyms above, and add Special Ed Teachers and School Psychologists to the mix!

California....what can I say? Name an area, and there's a very good chance that we need Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists and/or School Psychologists. How 'bout leaving the snow and cold behind for the upcoming school year!?

Phoenix, AZ - It seems that we are getting daily requests for AZ folk. The process to get credentialed is a bit cumbersome, but we'll get you the info to get you started and on your way. Most of these caseloads are working with the elementary set, so if you like the little ones, it's a good location.

My flip-flop philosophy for saving soles

Hi, all!

The title of this post is an indication as to how we find ways around problems. I always wear (in warmer months, anyway) flip-flops for the to and fro; car to building-building to car. I found that it's not only safer than wearing my high heeled shoes for the trek, but also saves me trips/money to the local cobbler (sorry Mr. Mongillo) for repairs to the soles of my favorite footwear.

I mentioned our new computer system in my previous post and am still battling that dragon! So, to get around the convolution, I am going to use this venue to send out some of our newest, bestest jobs instead of trying to navigate through our new platform for posting jobs on the internets. Sorry, mothership, but you made everything way too hard!

Below are some open positions in areas that are a bit unusual (not the normal Los Angeles, Denver, Chicago, Houston, etc.) spots with gorgeous vistas targeting those who are outdoorsy and want to be away from the "maddening crowds".

Angels Camp, CA needs a School Psychologist for the upcoming year. The area offers about any outdoor activity you might want; rafting, hiking, boating, or camping. Oh, and we can't forget wine country! The housing costs are considerably less than most of what you'd normally find in California,too!

Scottsbluff, NE has multiple needs for Speech Language Pathologists. This is on the "panhandle" of the state and really kind of out in the middle of nowhere. However, it's less than 3 hours to the northern mountains of Colorado and under 2 hours to Cheyenne, WY. The revitalized sweet town square will be your hangout for connecting to the community, participating in square dances (swing your partner) and enjoying festivals.

Grand Juntion, CO has requested Speech Pathologists and a Sign Language Interpreter for the 2017-2018 school year. What can I say about this area that you can't just imagine? Beautiful vistas, any outdoor activity you can think of + wineries! Locals will make the trip into Denver for concerts, major festivals, etc. And, it's just a couple of hours to Vail if you want to strap on your skis, but so much more economical for living expenses!

Cha-cha-cha-changes

Well, in the poetry of Paul Simon..."I have been one poor correspondent". There have been changes that I could use as an excuse for not keeping up with this blog, but I'll only mention the one that is consuming my days at the office of late. An entirely new system has been plopped into all of our computers at work. It will (they say) eventually be more organized and help us to place all of you on better contracts than in the past. However, it feels as if I've arrived home to my kitchen and someone has moved EVERYTHING to another locale! My spatula may be in my sock drawer or my measuring spoons in the bathtub, and all I want to do is COOK DINNER!

OK, enough of that, I'll limp along and figure out this new and improved way to conduct business at work if it KILLs me! HA!

In the meanwhile, this is GO TIME in school districts across the country! Most have or are about to finish out the 2016-2017 school year and they are calling us to help them to find qualified candidates for their open positions for the upcoming year. Even though I am sitting in my office at home without our lists of open jobs at my fingertips, I can tell you that most states are needing Speech Pathologists, Occupational Therapists, Sign Language Interpreters, School Psychs, Special Ed Teachers, Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, Teachers for the Visually Impaired, and most other disciplines related to Special Education.

I can recall needs in (alphabetical order) AK, AL, AR, AZ, CT, DC, DE, FL, GA, LA, MI, NE, PA, RI, TX, VA, WA, WV. Those are just the states that come to mind. Our lists will grow longer the closer we get into summer, as directors will return from their vacations, budgets will be approved and gaps in their staffs will become more apparent and the front of the school year looms ever nearer.

Call me if you are looking for a change, relocating or want to try a travel contract. I'm talking to you northern Ohio! Wouldn't you like to leave your snow boots with your sister and pack up those flip flops and head to FL or AZ? If you are just starting your career, it's a great way to check out different locations to see where you might want to eventually "land". Saturated Special Ed markets and work from home ideas

A couple of weeks ago, I landed on a "diamond" of a Speech Pathologist. She is bilingual, has her ASHA certification and a good bit of experience working in schools! I swoon over a resume with those qualifications! The down side to this multi-layered SLP is that she had just moved to Austin, TX. Now Austin, as most people can imagine, is a wonderful city with a vibrant night life, a clean downtown area and a multitude of offerings for both those seeking cultural activities and those who prefer outdoor adventures. There are also more than a few universities within 100 miles of Austin that offer master's programs for Speech Language Pathology. Because of Austin's popularity and the influx of SLP's into the city, there are seldom openings for SLP's through a contract service such as mine. School districts seldom need help finding qualified candidates, as they have them knocking down their front doors.

So....the next layer to this highly qualified "gem of an SLP" who landed in my inbox is that she is licensed to work in three other states besides TX-she is a perfect candidate to deliver services remotely through our tele-services department, VocoVision. We just happened to have a school district in Connecticut that needed an SLP to help them finish out their school year, and CT is one of the states where she holds a current license. So, just after a week of screening and instruction with our VocoVision team, she was ready to go and started work from her home office today!

If you live in one of those markets that has an overload of therapists and few open opportunities (Austin, Nashville, Miami, Birmingham, Boston, etc.), you might consider obtaining a license in a state where we're seeing a need for tele-therapy. A few of the states we are seeing are CA, IL, NM, and WA state. We will walk you through the processes and do our best to get you set up.

Think about a commute that consists of walking from your kitchen to your den, being there when your children arrive home from school, having a write-off on next year's taxes for a home office and...did I mention no commute??? (I live in Atlanta, there's NEVER not a traffic jam on my commute.)

License, fingerprint and certification, oh my!

Does it seem like getting ready to take a job as a healthcare professional is more and more complicated every week? We in the recruiting industry certainly see it! I'm not sure why all 50 states seem to have their very own requirements in order to practice in their particular state...do the children/patients that one sees change when a state line is crossed? Does your fingerprint change once you've crossed a state line? Does a politician knee-jerk react each time a lawsuit is filed?

Now, I'm not one that loves federal mandates, but it seems that at the very least, neighboring states could enact a bit of reciprocity, but then that particular state couldn't collect your money! Does this all boil down to politics and revenue? I'm beginning to think so! And, this post is merely to "put this out there". Where does one begin to make some changes in this regard? With state governments? With national boards such as ASHA or AOTA? I'm certainly not trying to reduce the protections we have in the medical community, but it seems to me that they could be streamlined and still be effective.

I'd love some feedback, as I am a mere recruiter and I might be totally ignorant of the logic behind the varying requirements on a state-by-state basis. Life keeps getting more and more complicated, and I'm working this year to simplify MY life; might this be a topic with some worth or am I totally off the mark?

Absolutely off subject - Cubs Win!

This is a post that my son wrote on Facebook this morning. I thought it was a great summation of why we all love the game so much. He played baseball from the time he could hold a bat for T-ball all the way through being the "ace" pitcher for his high school team; he even played with an adult league in recent years. (He's 28 yrs old now.) His first word was, of course, "ball", and I can't remember anytime in his youth that we didn't watch the Braves play. Here's his thoughts on the World Series and on baseball in general:


"Why do I love baseball so much? I just watched a 39 year old man hit his last home run ever in game 7 of the World Series. I just watched the life get knocked back into a team by a 36 year old who was barely hitting over .150 this postseason, who crushed a fastball from one of the most feared closers in the game. I watched a runner take out the shortstop on a rough slide into second to break up a double play, only to then watch the shortstop help the runner up and pat him on the back and joke with him. I saw some questionable managing, which many believe caused big momentum swings in the game. Most importantly, I watched two teams who just finished playing the game 162 times during the regular season and 15+ times during the postseason jump around, scream, and play with more emotion, sportsmanship, and respect for their opponent than any Super Bowl or NBA finals I have ever watched. I love the game because the people playing this game love the game, they love their teammates, they love the city they play for. Baseball is the greatest. Can't wait for opening day!"

Working from home jobs for SLP, Psychologist, Sign Language Interpreter!

I'm sure many of you have entertained the notion of "commuting" to your den and foregoing the "party" that is the usual traffic jam each morning. Our tele-practice division is growing by leaps and bounds this year. School districts have a shortage of qualified special ed professionals and are considering the concept of delivering services to their students remotely; we all know that children these days arrive into the world knowing how to use a touch screen!

A few of the requirements to be a part of this ever-growing industry include: a computer less than 5 years old, a good bit of tech skill, license/clearance/certification in both the state where you sit and the state where the student sits, and a good bit of independence in your work ethic.

Some of the benefits include: the aforementioned elimination of driving to and fro (save on gas, oil changes, not to mention missing out on road rages and possible wrecks), being home when your children get home from school, tax write-offs for your home office, etc., weekly direct deposit pay and free training/support from our team here at the office.

You would think that most school districts would have their staffs totally in place by now. However, especially in Special Education Departments the task seems to never end. Caseloads increase, an Occupational Therapist's spouse gets transferred, the baby decides to arrive 21 days early; the reasons for the gaps are endless.

We also find that there are a few (and let me emphasis a few) folks out there who are still checking out open positions for various reasons. There are several universities with August graduating classes, some therapists/special ed professionals have taken a position that isn't what they thought it might be, others are making an unexpected move to another part of the country.

Staffing services are set up to be that "go between" to assist the schools in finding a perfect candidate and finding a Special Ed professional that perfect job. Recruiter calls blowing up your phone?

I'm sure that most of you reading this blog have had your phone absolutely blown up by recruiters for the last......three...or make that three hundred months! Your options are vast for jobs, and you just might be considering being a bit more selective as to which calls you choose to answer. As a recruiter myself, I understand and realize that we sometimes are considered little more than tele-marketers. :-{ Most of us hope that we are bringing something to you that is useful, interesting and financially helpful to you and your situation. But, if you decide to use a recruiter, below is some information that might help you in your decision process. And...if you think I might "be your gal", give me a call at 770-325-0234!

Deciding whether to use a recruiter in your search for employment can be a confusing process at best. There are as many choices in recruiter personalities, styles, offered opportunities, etc. as there are professions out there. The most important aspect is to find someone who has a compatible personality, work ethic and delivers what he/she promises.

First, you might want to understand what drives a recruiter. It may be only money; it may be a desire to help people, it may be pressure from a manager or a combination of any or all of those, which is more likely the case. Staffing firms have a variety of structures to pay their recruiters; some may be straight salary, some may have commission only and others may have a combination of the two. My company falls into the later category, and is very fair; I might say, even brilliant in their pay structure. No one here asks for a raise; they simply help more people find work, and their commission increases.

You will also want to do some investigating of the company itself. Ask the recruiter who owns their company or the name under which they are publicly traded (if they are public) and do a search for their financial stability and years in business. You can also check with the Better Business Bureau to see if there are any "dings" or something more serious against the organization.

A really good way to test your recruiter is to ask him/her to call you back on a specific day and see if they follow up. I'm not going to say that I've never made a mistake and forgotten, but a good recruiter will find a way to make good on promises. Once again, finding a good match for your personality is key. You may be someone who doesn't like a lot of "checking in" phone calls, or you may enjoy a weekly conversation to touch base with your recruiter. alk to a few and get a feel for the one that makes you the most comfortable!

Rerun of a post from earlier with an update for the '16-'17 school year

We found this district an OT for the '15-'16 school year, but the OT was offered a position nearer her home and isn't returning this year. But the post below caught her attention, she loved the district and they loved her!

There is a school district in Northwest Colorado who would love to hear your rendition of this most famous song from the Sound of Music! When you're not being one with the mountains, they hope you'll also use your Occupational Therapy skills to serve their school children. This school district west of Vail, CO is seeking an OT to join their district for the 2016-2017 (updated to be current) school year.

This area of Colorado has attractions such as Rifle Mountain Park, popular with rock climbers; Rifle Falls State Park, Rifle Falls Fish Hatchery, Rifle Gap State Park, and Harvey Gap State Park. The city also has a golf course, a theater, and hosts a yearly fair that includes professional rodeos, bull riding, live music and a demolition derby.

If you think you might like to "get away from it all" and relax next to the fire and read a great book, yet have access to numerous outdoor activities and small town functions, this school district is ready to greet you with open arms....ala Julie Andrews' famous stance in the Sound of Music!

Now we can all relax; school's out!

Not so fast, bunkie. A recruiter who works with school districts is far from relaxing this time of year! The open positions started coming into the office early this year, and it seems that they've only piled on day by day.

Just three months ago, we might have had a page and a half of open jobs for the upcoming school year, but now there are at least ten pages of SLP, OT, PT, Sign Language Interpreter, Special Ed Teacher, School Psychology and both Teachers for the Deaf and for the Visually Impaired job openings throughout the country.

Early requests for Special Ed Professionals for 2016-2017

This has been a highly unusual year for our schools division. In the past, the majority of our requests for therapists, psychologists, sign language interpreters, etc. have come in after Memorial Day. Here we are over a month away from that "intro into summer" holiday, and our spreadsheets are full of open jobs for the 2016-2017 school year!

If you are looking for a contract position in a school system anywhere in the USA, give me a call, and there's a decent chance that we'll be able to assist you. In full disclosure, though, there are some areas that just aren't good markets for us. Locations that are very popular and much desired places to live (Nashville, Austin, Miami, etc.) just don't need our help finding people. Also, states that have several universities with programs of your specialty might also have new grads "knocking down their doors", and wouldn't need to call us to help them recruit. For example, Kentucky has at least 6 colleges/universities with Occupational Therapy programs; Wisconsin, too.

School Psychologists!! Join the world of travel therapy for the 2016-2017 school year

This afternoon I took a peek at our roster for open jobs in schools. I was shocked to see that there were 45 openings for School Psychologists! It seems that there is an acute shortage across the country. Now, granted, this is the time of year that evaluations pile up and schools are seeking help to finish out the current school year, however, many of these districts are asking us to help them find candidates for the 2016-2017 year.

My company has been placing Occupational, Speech and Physical therapist "travelers" in schools for several years now, but it seems that other disciplines are just as eligible for the benefits afforded to those working as a contractor/traveler. Check out the January, 2011 post on this blog for a FAQ sheet to help with questions about these nomadic opportunities. If you are a School Psychologist, you are the latest "hot" commodity!

You'd think that we'd have all the Special Ed departments in all the schools all over the country quite covered with specialty staff by mid-February. Well.....not so much! There are still positions open all over, but I'm dedicating this post to our clients in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Work from home delivering tele-speech services

Soliant's tele-medicine division is catching on like fire! It's been a bit of a process to educate the public on the advantages of this new model for delivering Speech services to school children across the country. More and more districts are using this service to complete their therapy teams. Soliant's sister company, VocoVision, has an excellent staff that has introduced the concept, educated both the school therapy teams and the Speech Pathologists, and then delivered whatever hardware, software and training is necessary.

What circumstances are most common and useful for tele-speech delivery? Just to name a few: emergency situations where an SLP leaves a position unexpectedly; jobs that have too few hours to make it worth one's time to travel to the school to deliver services; a difficult requirement such as a bilingual therapist or one who can also sign; a remote area of the state where housing might not be available; and a myriad of other circumstances.

If you are an SLP with ASHA certification, are reasonably tech savvy, have a computer under 5 years old and can work independently, you might want to check out this option for a future contract position. In addition, you need to hold an active license/certification in the state where you reside and also in the state where the student is being served.

Warm Wishes and Safe Holidays to All!!

Just on a personal note, I hope everyone had a great 2015! I thank each and every one of you for your dedication and spirit of goodness in the work you do each and every day!

As we careen towards the new year and the 2nd semester in schools, please know that school districts aren't finished with filling their open positions. This is the time of year where it actually makes more sense for them to use a contract service, as maternity leaves extend, spouses get relocated and caseloads increase. Often, these shorter term positions are best handled by a contract service, as all 80 of us are in the office 40+ hours a week specifically to recruit and take care of all the credentialing that is required of each of you before you report for duty.

So, having said that, I will also mention that all the open jobs you see on line are not always there; they may have been open when the job was posted, but could have been closed out by the next day. Some of them are also picked up by other websites who re-post them. (I've never understood how that is an advantage for their business.) The jobs flash off and on at a dizzying pace in here; I can barely keep up with it myself. It's always best to check with a recruiter that you trust to check on the status of the job in which you are interested. For this post, I am only listing the school jobs for which I am responsible, as I know the status of each of them. So....here ya go!
